Creek and Cherokee peoples lived in the Marietta and Atlanta area for centuries
before non-native people started settling in the early 1800s. Marietta
was first recognized in 1834, and predates the city of Atlanta. Marietta
was the initial choice for a major railroad hub, but that honor instead
went to the community that would become Atlanta. Like Atlanta, Marietta
was mostly burned to the ground during the Civil War, but both towns bounced
back to become the vibrant communities they are today.
Today, more than 55,000 people live in Marietta and about 5.5 million people
live in the greater Atlanta area. Marietta is home to the Dobbins Air
Reserve Base and a Lockheed Martin manufacturing plant, which provide
a great deal of the city's economic activity. YKK Group, the world's
largest zipper manufacturer, also has a significant presence in Marietta.
